MicroDegree

for Interdisciplinary Skills - what is it?

Do you believe that global challenges cannot be solved by one discipline alone? Do you and your fellow students use very different terms and no one understands what is meant? The discussion after the Leonardo lecture is rather sluggish because everyone is talking past each other? Then the Interdisciplinary Skills Certificate is for you!

This certificate allows you to systematize and reflect on your experiences in Leonardo teaching, so that you become a specialist in interdisciplinary problem solving. It is also very important for us to be able to officially recognize the special commitment and often outstanding achievements in the project.

So if you regularly attend Leonardo courses during your studies and want to further develop your interdisciplinary skills, we would like to make this possible for you with our MicroDegree. At the end, you will receive an official recognition from RWTH Aachen University, which you can use for job applications, for example.

What is the scope of the MicroDegree and how is the curriculum structured?

The MicroDegree will have a scope of 15 ECTS and can easily be completed alongside your regular studies. After all, interdisciplinary skills always include sound disciplinary expertise. The curriculum is made up of onboarding, in-depth content and an integration component.

There is always a foundation course at the beginning. The main aim here is to develop an awareness of the problem. How do we agree on common problem definitions and solution strategies in science, but also in professional life and politics? Which terms are used in different disciplines, but with different meanings? Here you will learn the basics of working in interdisciplinary settings using practical examples and realistic field reports. You can take the course flexibly and independently online in Moodle and then complete it with a Dynexite exam.

The most important part of the MicroDegree continues to be our regular courses. You will attend our lectures, workshops and seminars and contribute as an expert in interdisciplinarity. After all, you have learned a lot in the foundation course that you can now apply. In each course, you will take an exam that is specially designed for interdisciplinary skills. Reflecting on your experiences is particularly important to us!

The MicroDegree concludes with the integration performance. This is about collecting and reflecting on the skills you have acquired. Interdisciplinary situations are diverse and your personal development is individual, which is why the main focus at the end is on what you have done with the opportunities and knowledge we have offered.

When can I start the course?

The MicroDegree will be officially studyable in a few semesters. However, you can already collect credits from our curriculum now and have them recognized later. The introductory course is expected to be available in a pilot phase from winter semester 2025/26.
