Religions do not have a good standing in Germany. Since 2022, a majority of the population no longer belongs to any church. For many people – especially in the academic world – faith no longer seems contemporary. Reason, rationality and science are seen as the guiding principles of enlightened modernity.

But on closer inspection, is this true at all? Are science and faith mutually exclusive? Do people believe less because they are no longer in church? And what role do other religions and forms of spirituality play? In this course, we illuminate the intersections of religion, culture, and science, and ask about the role of faith in the present and future. The many topics and perspectives include modern spirituality and world religions, as well as philosophy and the natural sciences.

Student engagement plays a central role in this process. Together we visit places of faith of different religions, read texts and discuss among ourselves and with selected experts.

Learning Outcomes

Students learn about different religions and places of religious practice. They discuss current debates around the relationship between religion, faith and the modern world. They reflect on the relationship between faith, science and culture.
