In 2009, international scientists formulated the so-called planetary load limits for nine key natural systems and processes [1]. One of the key messages of the publication was that, along with the decline in biodiversity and climate change, serious global environmental changes endanger sustainable global development.

Our lecture series deals with the question: Which health effects and interdisciplinary challenges are associated with exceeding the planetary limits? For this purpose, the concept and the current scientific status of the planetary load limits are explained in a total of two basic lectures. In addition, we answer the question “What is health?” With a view to individual health and the overall social context.

In the following main part, a planetary load limit and the health consequences of their load will be examined more comprehensively for each event. The lecture format for the main part is an interdisciplinary tandem lecture: For 30 minutes each, a medical professional and a representative from a corresponding non-medical field (e.g. engineering, natural sciences, agriculture) discuss various aspects of a load limit. Each lecture is followed by a moderated discussion with the students. The last lecture examines the importance of exposure limits in the context of mental health, social responsibility, and global justice.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the lecture series, the students will know the different planetary load limits and their current status. Additionally, they learn about different health definitions and the concept of planetary health. They will understand the various health consequences that come along with the exhaustion of the respective planetary load limit.
