Description

The module “Ethics of Mission” deals with the ethical aspects of mission, religious freedom of speech, and religious persuasion. It combines theoretical considerations with empirical research findings to shed light on the dazzling spectrum of terms related to ‘mission’ and “missionary work” and their normative implications and political boundaries. In doing so, it breaks new ground in a number of areas, covering topics such as modern evangelical mission as well as digital spaces, practices, and technologies.

Relevant content of the module includes the question of the conditions under which missionary activity and speech would be permissible, as well as the role of religion and its spread from a historical and political perspective. It will be discussed whether being able to talk to others about one’s own convictions and beliefs without restriction should be considered an expression of religious freedom. At the same time, the vulnerability of those who are claimed for certain beliefs will be addressed. The question of appropriate ethical boundaries and freedoms, spaces of protection and enablement should always be considered.

The tension between missionary work as a form of religious freedom and as a political tool is a global challenge. The module examines colonial continuities from a historical perspective and addresses religious freedom in post-colonial and neo-colonial contexts as well as religious-political lines of conflict from a contemporary perspective. It also becomes clear that religion has been and continues to be used as a means of exercising power and domination.

Learning Outcomes

  • Students will learn about the contexts, ethical aspects, and implications of mission and religious freedom of speech from a historical and contemporary perspective.
  • Students will identify ethical issues related to mission and missionary practices, both in traditional settings and in digital spaces.
  • Students will assess the normative implications and socio-political limits and freedoms of missionary and persuasion practices.
  • Students will critically reflect on the tension between missionary work as a practice of religious freedom and as a political tool of power, also with regard to (neo-)colonial continuities.
