In a world undergoing profound and disruptive transformation, many place their hopes in the potential
of scientific cooperation to build bridges between countries whose political relations have otherwise
deteriorated. Science is commonly understood as the production of methodologically validated
knowledge. Rather than being guided by particular interests or normative commitments, it is ideally
oriented toward the pursuit of truth, which is regarded as universal. This aspiration enables science to
create a distinctive form of connection across cultures: the shared commitment to critical inquiry and
rational discourse provides a common ground on which mutual understanding may emerge beyond
political differences. International scientific collaborations, such as joint research conducted on the
International Space Station (ISS), offer compelling examples of how scientific cooperation can facilitate
dialogue and collaboration despite geopolitical tensions.
At the same time, this optimistic picture has become increasingly complex. While the potential of
science diplomacy should not be underestimated, it is equally important to question whether some
expectations regarding its capacities may be overly optimistic. The promise of mutual understanding
often rests on the assumption of a universal scientific rationality. Yet contemporary developments
reveal that scientific practices are embedded within distinct cultural, political, and institutional contexts.
As a result, differences between scientific cultures may become more salient than their presumed
commonalities.
This module opens the interdisciplinary lecture series of the Käte Hamburger Kolleg: Cultures of
Research to participants of the Project Leonardo Programme. The lecture series, which focuses on the
theme of Varieties of Science during the winter semester, provides a platform for examining the
opportunities and limitations of science diplomacy. A key global challenge today is to identify and
strengthen the foundations of cooperation among countries with diverse political systems, cultural
traditions, and scientific institutions. The module therefore explores the role that science diplomacy can
play in maintaining and fostering international cooperation under conditions of increasing geopolitical

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

  • explain different forms and approaches of science diplomacy and their relationship to various fields
    of scientific research;
  • assess the significance of science diplomacy for international cooperation, particularly between
    states with otherwise limited political cooperation;
  • recognize the dependence of scientific knowledge production on its cultural and institutional
    contexts;
  • distinguish heuristically between major types of scientific systems and research cultures;
  • identify and apply key analytical dimensions for examining varieties of science;
  • analyse how different varieties of science influence the opportunities and constraints of science
    diplomacy;
  • critically evaluate the potential and limitations of science diplomacy in light of contemporary
    geopolitical and scientific developments.

Program

The module consists of two workshops, held at the beginning and the end of the lecture series at the
Käte Hamburger Kolleg: Cultures of Research, as well as participation in the lecture series itself.
The workshops introduce and contextualize the perspective of science diplomacy and provide
opportunities for discussion and reflection. The lecture series addresses a broad range of topics related
to global varieties of science and research cultures. It features presentations by distinguished
international scholars from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds.
The detailed programme of the lecture series will be announced at the beginning of the winter
semester.
