More than a Stage

Theatre is far more than what happens on stage. This course focuses on everything that takes place
behind the scenes: how a performance programme and its individual productions are developed, and
how they are communicated to audiences. The module introduces students to central areas of theatre
practice and examines the organisational, creative, and communicative processes that make a production
possible and visible to the public.
The course is structured into three thematic blocks:

1. General Structures – Organization and Processes in Theatre / Introduction to Theatre Studies
At the beginning of this block, students are introduced to key concepts, historical developments, theories,
and practices from the perspective of theatre studies. They then explore fundamental questions such as:
How is a production created? Who is involved in the process? What departments and professional roles
exist within a theatre institution? What is the function of theatre mediation?
Students will also engage in practical exercises based on the production “Tischlein deck dich!”.

2. Communication
Communication is a core element of theatrical practice. This block addresses both internal and external
communication, including press and public relations, social media, website communication, campaign
work, and collaboration with multipliers and partner organisations.

3. Dramaturgy
In this block, students explore the content-related, conceptual, and artistic development of theatre
productions. This includes the selection of texts and source materials, their adaptation, the development
of directorial concepts, and their realisation in rehearsal processes up to the premiere. It also includes the
creation of programme notes and audience engagement formats, using the production “Der Fall
Schwerte (AT)” as a case study.
In addition to theoretical foundations, the course offers practical exercises in the fields of mediation,
communication, and dramaturgy, enabling students to gain direct insight into the diverse professional
areas of theatre. In each thematic block, students are given the opportunity to work on practical tasks.
The module is designed for students from all disciplines who are interested in culture, organisation,
creative processes, and teamwork.
