Museums are undergoing profound change. They are adapting to the changing needs and expectations of society and want to become more accessible and inclusive. They are no longer just places of one-sided knowledge transfer for privileged minorities, but are increasingly developing into open, social spaces that actively intervene in social debates. Using the example of Aachen’s museum landscape, the seminar will look at points of contact with digitality, participatory and practically applicable design processes and contemporary museum education formats that respond to social changes- and want to actively help shape them. To this end, the didactic analyses of three museums (Ludwig Forum, Suermondt Museum and Centre Charlemagne) determined in the summer semester 2025 as part of a seminar held by the Chair of Didactics of the SocialSciences (IPW) will be used as a basis.

In the planned format, participants will acquire both theoretical foundations and practical basic skills in the areas of museum education, historical-political education and design techniques. The seminar is aimed at students from all disciplines who are interested in new developments in the museum sector and would like to help shape creative solutions for the future of the museum landscape.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding the transformation of museums – Students recognise the functional, structural and content-related changes in the museum landscape and their social significance.
  • Developing an interlocking approach – Students develop participatory and design-motivated concepts that combine digital and inclusive possibilities with contemporary museum education methods.
