On the one hand, dealing with raw materials is a matter of course and commonplace, but on the other hand, the sustainable extraction and use of raw materials poses a challenge that is difficult to solve. Contemporary societies have become widely ramified and multilayeredly dependent on raw materials. The secure supply of raw materials as well as secure access to raw materials are therefore not without reason regarded as a global challenge. In the course of the module, central concepts for understanding this complex of problems are prepared in an interdisciplinary manner and discussed on the basis of central challenges of raw materials policy. In addition, selected actors and their strategies and policies in the context of a sustainable supply of raw materials will have their say in the course.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, students are able to…

– … describe the importance of sustainable raw material extraction and explain the role of domestic mining against the background of a secure supply of raw materials.

– … describe different types of raw material extraction and distinguish them from each other based on their respective requirements and framework conditions.

  • … to develop the social embedding of raw material extraction as a relevant issue in a subject-specific way.
  • … to discuss the background and elements of a raw materials strategy and to put the raw materials strategy of the Federal Government into context.
  • … to know and describe the interdependencies of different factors (economic, ecological, social) and to be able to apply them to concrete examples.
  • … be able to explain the complex issues of resource dependency of transformation processes using the example of the energy transition.
